A Rare Glimpse Of London's Oldest Underwater Tunnel
LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 12: Rotherhithe station houses the entrance to the Thames Tunnel on March 12, 2010 in London, England. The tunnel was built by Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1852 as an alternative crossing of the River Thames. In it's first week of opening over half the population of London paid to walk it's floodlight 1300 foot length. Eventually the Thames Tunnel housed a shopping arcade, theatre and had a reputation for bawdy carnivalesque sideshows and other Victorian entertainments. Over the next two days 3000 people will take a walking tour of the tunnel which is being upgraded as part of the new east London over ground railway line. (Photo by Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images)
