Baseball: Mets lose pitcher Perez for season

AP News (2009-08-25 19:45:39)

The New York Mets said Wednesday that pitcher Oliver Perez will undergo season-ending surgery, joining Mets ace Johan Santana on the sidelines.

Mets medical director David Altchek diagnosed Perez with patella tendon tendinosis in his right knee which will require surgery.

He should be fully recovered for spring training next year.

Perez, in his eighth season in the major leagues, posted a record of 3-4 with a 6.82 earned run average over 14 starts.

The team placed him on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday and recalled pitcher Lance Broadway from minor league affiliate Buffalo.

The news comes a day after the Mets announced that Santana will require surgery to repair bone chips in his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season.
