Blue Jays trade Gonzalez to Braves for Escobar

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Toronto Blue Jays have swapped shortstops with the Atlanta Braves, acquiring Yunel Escobar from the top team in the National League in exchange for Alex Gonzalez, the team said on Wednesday.

The Blue Jays also acquired left-handed pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes and sent minor league players Tim Collins and Tyler Pastronicky to Atlanta as part of the five-player deal.

Escobar, a 27-year-old Cuban, had a .238 batting average and 19 RBIs in 75 games this season with the Braves, who have a one-game lead in the National League.

Gonzalez, a 33-year-old Venezuelan, had a .259 batting average, 17 home runs and 50 RBIs in 85 games this year for a Blue Jays team that is fourth in the American League East division.
