SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Pitcher Cole Hamels shut down the San Diego Padres in eight scoreless innings to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-0 victory on Sunday.
The left-hander struck out six batters and allowed just four hits as the Phillies won their third successive game against the National League West-leading Padres (76-53).
San Diego was dominated by the Philadelphia pitchers during the three-game series and managed just three runs.
Mike Sweeney hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the offense, which helped the Phillies (73-57) keep their edge in the NL wild card race.
