Cecil Cooper, who has held the manager position since 2007, was fired by the Houston Astros on Monday.
Third-base coach Dave Clark will take over on an interim basis from the 59-year-old Cooper.
Cooper led the Astros to an 86-75 record in 2008 while contending for a Major League Baseball playoff spot.
Houston has gone just 70-79 this season, and slipped into fourth place in the National League Central division.
The 47-year-old Clark joined the Astros' coaching staff last season.
