MIAMI (Reuters) - The Florida Marlins will retain Edwin Rodriguez as manager for the rest of the Major League Baseball season, the team said on Tuesday.
Rodriguez was named interim manager last week when the Marlins fired Fredi Gonzalez in a bid to salvage the team's season and make a run at the playoffs after falling short last year.
Players were informed moments before their game against the New York Mets, the team said on their website (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/).
Local media had linked Bobby Valentine, who managed the Texas Rangers and Mets, with the post but negotiations fell apart over the weekend.
The Marlins (37-40) lie fourth in the National League East division, seven and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves.
