OAKLAND (Reuters) - Los Angeles Angels slugger Kendry Morales will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a broken leg he suffered when celebrating a game-winning home run late last month, the team said on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Cuban first baseman, who damaged the left leg on May 29, had surgery on Thursday and there was no timetable set for his return, the team said on its website. (http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/)
Following the team's 6-1 loss in Oakland on Thursday, Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia declared Morales out for the season but said prospects looked good for a long-term recovery.
Morales's absence is a blow for the Angels as he led the team with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs and a .290 batting average at the time of his injury.
He broke his leg when he landed awkwardly after jumping into a cheering scrum of team mates who awaited his arrival at home plate following the grand slam blast. Morales was carted off the field.
