Phillies All-Star 2B Utley to have surgery on injured right thumb
Phillies star second baseman Chase Utley is set to have surgery on his injured right thumb.
The team says the surgery will be done Thursday in New York.
Utley is leading the fan voting for a starting spot in the All-Star game later this month. He was put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a sprained ligament. He hurt himself a day earlier while trying to stretch a single into a double.
Utley is hitting .277 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs this season.
Philadelphia was set to play in Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
