Pittsburgh catcher Doumit sidelined, broken wrist

Pittsburgh catcher Ryan Doumit will need surgery to repair a broken bone in his right wrist and will miss eight to 10 weeks, the Major League Baseball team said Tuesday.

Doumit, who led National League catchers with a .318 average last season, is to have surgery on Thursday.

Doumit broke his wrist while batting in Sunday's 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Believing the injury was not that serious, he stayed in the game, but felt more pain later.

Further tests on Tuesday revealed the break.

"This is something I didn't see coming," Doumit said. "You do everything you can in the offseason to prepare. ... To have something like this, it's devastating. No one wants to be told they can't play for eight to 10 weeks."
