DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit Tigers hard-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya will miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury, the team said on Tuesday.
Zumaya fractured a bone in his right elbow during the eighth inning of the Tigers' 7-5 win over the host Minnesota Twins on Monday.
The 25-year-old right-hander hurled a 99 miles-per-hour fastball at the Twins' Delmon Young and began writhing in pain. He dropped his glove and fell to his knees, clutching his elbow.
An MRI and X-rays taken at a Minneapolis hospital revealed the injury, the team said on its website (http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com).
Zumaya was 6-3 with a 1.94 ERA in 2006 when he helped the Tigers reach the World Series. But he has been unable to complete a season since and has a career 13-12 record.
In 31 games this season Zumaya was 2-1 with a 2.58 ERA.
