Twins add Mahay to mix, revamped 'pen takes shape

Twins finalize Mahay signing, revamped bullpen takes shape for stretch run in AL Central race

The Minnesota Twins have signed left-hander Ron Mahay, another arm for their struggling bullpen.

Mahay agreed to a contract Friday, but his deal wasn't announced by the team until Saturday. The 38-year-old had a 4.79 ERA in 41 appearances for Kansas City, which released him this week.

Knuckleballing reliever R.A. Dickey was designated for assignment to make room for Mahay on the 40-man roster. Dickey was sent to the minors earlier this month.

Mahay is the latest attempt to fill a hole as the Twins try to catch up in the AL Central race. In the last month, they've also added right-handed reliever Jon Rauch, starting pitcher Carl Pavano and shortstop Orlando Cabrera.

The Twins entered Saturday in second place, 4 1/2 games behind Detroit.
